Promotion in Korea

Promotion in Korea can be obnoxious, loud, in your face and usually involves an absurd amount of noise and environmental pollution. That said, there’s something oddly comforting about the fact that it’s unapologetic about how loud, vile and annoying it is. There is very little that is subversive or scheming about it (well, with the exception of a lot of advertising of beauty products geared toward women… i.e. ’skin bleach’ because attractive apparently = white… scary stuff). Quite simply companies compete to be the loudest, plaster the highest number of posters in public space and often even resort to driving around the neighbourhood with megaphones advertising their products.
Though there are some amazing examples, this is one of the few we’ve been able to catch on film. Witness below the advertising of a local nightclub. Keep in mind we live in a relatively quiet suburb of Seoul. The street they’re advertising on is DESERTED on a Tuesday night. That said, they’ve seen fit to purchase and fuel up three red cars (the nightclub’s name is Tomato), mount large neon blow-up structures on the roof, blast rude (not in the traditional sense but used in the way faves Emily and Sabrina bust it out) techno music and
then LITTER flyers all over the commercial area adjacent to our apartment buildings.
Effective? You be the judge.
