The Neighbours Are Moving
June 5th, 2007 by Erin
As with most things in this land of bass-ackwards, moving appears to be…different. I’m not sure what the percentage of Koreans that live in apartment buildings is, but due to the fact that 85% of the peninsula is mountainous and about 10% is arable land, suffice it to say, it’s a concrete jungle. The elevators here (at least the residential ones) are comically small. That is to say any other building with 15 floors of tenants would have more than one elevator with an 8 person capacity. This presents some challenges for moving furniture and the like. Moving in and out of an apartment building is never easy (read: especially if you lived with Jeremy
…), but because there is no second elevator for the tenants to use, one cannot just simply put the elevator on service all day. That said, we present you with the following innovation:
Some things to note:
1. The small platform which carries the cargo has no protective railing or safety net to hold the furniture etc. down…the movers just ‘know’ what its capacity is…sketchy.
2. There is a good foot gap between the platform and the open sliding door porch window through which the heavy stuff is precariously passed.
3. If something requires two people to lift off of the platform, someone will ride up on this contraption (which, for the record, in the absence of video… tears up like a bat-out-of-hell and screeches to a halt at the top) or *gulp* climb out of the window and onto the platform in order to facilitate the unloading.
Once again I am left with the impression…’Wow! Impressive! Efficient! Innovative! and… What the hell?’….
