We hit up Insa-dong after the DMZ tour. This is a trendy area with great shops, street vendors, all laid out on a car-free cobblestone street. Is as European as Asia gets. We grabbed some road-pops and did some touring. There are some absolutely beautiful little restaurants hidden in a maze of alleys off the main drag. Of course they all serve the same thing – Korean food – so it was a bit of a bummer. There are many art galleries, patios and unique sights to be seen here. A favourite of first-time visitors is the dude pounding rice into a thick goo that eventually becomes a tasty treat (depending on who you ask), but it is fun to watch.

We found a decent restaurant on the top of a building we were touring, sat on the floor and ate. Here we tried Soju for the first time. This is the Korean hard liquor made from sweet potatoes and sells for a dollar per 750ml. We all agreed it didn’t taste totally like hairspray (read: was barely drinkable). I would have a go again.

We had optimistic plans to hang out with the guys that night but an hour long subway ride home convinces you that you are more tired than you think you are. We ended up watching movies instead. Mike and I spooned, but only for a short while.

Try soju cocktails (lemon, cucumber, yogurt, etc.) instead. They are eminantly drinkable, you know.
