Odio – Heaven ……

On Sunday the 14th of January we decided to hit up the seaside near our town. Some of our students were telling us about this trending restaurant area where you can find “fresh and raw fish”. We were thinking some crab and sushi; at the very least a good tour of the coast. One thing that frustrates me is on every corner, in every town, you see fish tanks with huge crabs (and other things). I have never seen so many crabs.. but no where can you go and eat crab! You have to bring it home and we don’t have the pots to do it (yet). I just want to hit up a a normal seafood restaurant with bibs and cocktail sauce. That does not exist here.
Anyways.. we got to Oido which is a charming little seaside restaurant district which looks out on to the yellow sea towards China. The coast has an electric bar wire fence with guard stations every 1000 feet which is meant to keep out an North Korean refugees (I can only presume).

However there is a large pier like place right in the middle where people come and go and farm oysters. It sort of negates the fence but who am I to question. We saw about 20 different vendors cooking fresh oysters over an open fire. Our in the half frozen bay you can see old ladies picking them right out of the Ocean.

The smell was that of wonderful fresh seafood and I was in awe. I had always dreamed of being able to eat this fresh, literally right off the pier and not in some overpriced tourist trap wharf.

Here and old Korean man roasted up a pile of Oysters for $5! This truly was my idea of heaven. Video’s will be posted shortly (sorry we are having a bit of trouble with them) and some pictures in the photo section and below. (P.S. Those are Oysters not rocks)

The sun was going down right then and all we were saying was “I can’t wait to come back here!” The restaurants were all highly Koreanized and we figured out quickly that I wouldn’t be eating crab legs with warm butter that night. We went to the cheapest looking place and we found the menu ranging from $80-$120.. Since I didn’t expect the meals to be served on a bed of $20 bills we left and decided to treat ourselves to TGI Fridays near home. Still all in all an amazing time.. I was considering coming back the following weekend….
