Geyongju Part 5
January 15th, 2007 by Erin
The last stop of the day was the Chemseongdae Observatory. This small astronomical observation tower is thought to be the oldest in Asia. Built in 632 the tower was build to watch the movement of the stars, predict solar and lunar eclipses as well as to aid farmers in determining the cycle of the moon. The structure is considered to be one of the mathematical phenomena of the age with its near perfect symmetry and its alignment with certain important constellations. It was very cool to picture the astronomers of old laying up there for hours watching the stars go by. We all got a little photo happy at this point because the sunset was spectacular. I’m not really sure that any of the pics capture it but check some out.

Sean will post tomorrow on the hotel escapade and NYE in Busan.
